Style as a Form of Self-Expression and Identity

Style has power. It’s a way to express our truest selves, a nonverbal message to showcase our identity, an avenue to build self-confidence, and a medium to command respect. A curated image communicates who we are to the world without having to speak.

As visual creatures, humans make judgment calls about others based on what they wear. Clothes, therefore, are an easy way to cultivate our image and show it to the rest of the world. The way we dress ourselves, the clothes we choose to wear, and the accessories we pair them with all influence the way others perceive us. Every individual has their own personal style, whether it's edgy, minimalist, bohemian, or preppy. If our personal style aligns with who we are, we have the ability to express ourselves in an authentic and exceptional way. Living in a capitalist society, we seemingly have endless clothing options at our disposal to choose from. Someone who wears bright colors and bold prints may be seen as outgoing and confident, while another individual who prefers neutral tones and classic styles may be seen as sophisticated and timeless. The way we dress can communicate our personality, our values, and even our mood to those unknowingly watching.

However, the opposite is also true. When we dress inauthentically, in an attempt to mimic someone else or hide parts of ourselves, we create an illusion of confusion or misunderstanding of ourselves and our personal brand. We are visual creatures, and others will associate our dress with our brand, personality, and demeanor. Self-expression is one of the most significant abilities we have as human beings, and capturing and showing that through our style is powerful and uplifting.

Personal style is a way to enhance self-image, confidence, and identity. Style has the power to elevate a sense of self and even our mood: when we see ourselves as beautiful and confident because of what we are wearing, we start to internalize that belief. Style provides the opportunity to identify as a unique individual rather than being a copycat of someone else or feeling like we have to fit into a mold that the fashion world dictated. When we look in the mirror and feel assured by the man or woman staring back at us, we can find the desire to boldly move forward and accomplish the mission we’ve been given in this life.

Ultimately, style is a way to express ourselves and communicate our identity to the world. It's a way to showcase our inimitability and individuality and to connect with others who share our interests and values. So, don't miss the opportunity to share your story and show your unique self to the world. Those around you will be forever changed because you were here and dared to live out your mission.
